Panthers recruit Carter from OHL
The UPEI Panthers men's hockey team has added left winger Matt Carter from the Ontario Hockey League's Owen Sound Attack for the 2008-09 season.
The six-foot-one, pound Carter will help to replace some of the scoring and physical play lost with the graduation of captain Josh Patterson.
Carter, who played three games with the ECHL's Phoenix Roadrunners this season, led the Attack in scoring with 30 goals and 54 points in 61 games.
Area schools at NBIAA volleyball
Teams from Fredericton High School head the list of entries at both the provincial boys and girls AAA volleyball championship tournaments scheduled Friday and Saturday in Saint John. FHS is top seed and Oromocto High third seed from the south-west regions in the boys tourney. Defending champion is Bernice MacNaughton from Moncton. FHS is top seed and Leo Hayes High is fifth seed from the south-west in the girls tourney. Nepisiquit of Bathurst is defending champion. Ecole Sainte Anne Castors are defending champions in each of the boys AA and girls AA tourneys at Dalhousie Regional and John Caldwell of Grand Falls respectively. Nackawic High also has teams in each tourney.
Minto-Chipman hosting class A volleyball
Host Minto Memorial High Tigers are the top seed from the north-east region at the provincial high school boys A volleyball championship scheduled Friday and Saturday. Other area teams in the eight-team field include Chipman High and Stanley High from the north-east and Harvey High and Hartland High from the south west. Chipman High is hosting the girls A tourney involving 10 teams including top seed Minto High and Chipman from the north east and Harvey High, Hartland High and McAdam High from the south west. Play begins Friday, concluding with the final Saturday at 4 o'clock.
Basketball camp at Carleton North
Carleton North High will provide the setting for a week-long basketball camp incorporating day and evening sessions July 7-11. Nine varsity coaches from Maine and N.B. will lead players through fundamendals and stressed sessions in all aspects of the sport. Players are grouped on the first day according to ability level.

Bryden brothers earn medals in gymnastics
Fourteen-year-old Campbell Bryden won golds in each of the high bar and floor exercises, finishing third overall in the boys level 5 division at the Eastern Canadian gymnastics championships held in Longueuil, Que. His younger brother, Tyler, 13, won a bronze medal on the rings also in level 5. The two along with Caroline McAvity, Amy Sterling, Lauren Gould and Kaitlyn Munn, each in 16 and over national open, and Keara MacDonald in national open ages 13-15 will be going to the nationals on behalf of the Kingswood Gymnastics Club June 1-7.
