With the sound of Elicia

Doaktown residents are cheering for How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? contestant Elicia MacKenzie because a major branch in her family tree extends to their community.
MacKenzie, who now lives in Vancouver, is competing for the role of Maria Von Trapp in a Mirvish Production performance of The Sound of Music. CBC Television is producing the weekly competition that airs Sunday and Monday evenings.
MacKenzie may have only spent the first six years of her life in New Brunswick, but her father Steven hails from Doaktown and lives in Apohaqui.
He said he's proud to see his hometown rally around his daughter.
"That's where I grew up," said the proud father. "And my sister, Karen, lives there, and my father and some other relatives. So she's got a good cheering section there."
Aunt Karen Lyons said her family gathers to watch all of Elicia's weekly appearances.
"I have a houseful here watching. My daughter and my grandkids and I are all rooting for her here, so it's a lot of fun,'' said Lyons.
Lyons said the family is confident MacKenzie can win the competition and the exposure will help shape her future.
MacKenzie said she's happy to know that New Brunswickers are supporting her in her quest to win the coveted role of Maria Von Trapp. She said she's not surprised to have family and friends cheering her on from thousands of kilometres away.
"Well, there's a lot of MacKenzies," she said with a laugh. "It's really great to have their support. There's been so much going on. It's sort of surreal to think that people are rooting for me to win this thing."
Only three contestants remain in the nationally televised competition.
MacKenzie will have to wow famous guest judge Andrew Lloyd Webber in order to make it to the final performance, which is scheduled for Monday.
