Fredericton escaped unscathed after tropical storm Cristobal dumped heavy rain on parts of southern Nova Scotia on Tuesday.

Meteorologist Claude Cote said the storm was so far at sea that wind and rain were not significant in central New Brunswick.

The storm dumped an entire month's worth of rain on some areas of Nova Scotia in less than 24 hours.

The heavy rainfall flooded basements in the Cape Sable region at the southern tip of the province, and at least one road was washed out in Sambro, about 20 kilometres southwest of Halifax.

However, Cristobal's most powerful winds - clocked at 90 kilometres per hour at the northeastern edge of the storm - remained well offshore.

Gusts of up to 33 kilometres per hour were recorded at the Fredericton airport Tuesday afternoon.

The forecast for today is cloudy with sunny periods and a few showers beginning in the evening, with a high of 24 C.

Cote said hot and humid weather is in the forecast for Thursday with showers and a humidex of 36 C.

The Canadian Hurricane Centre in Dartmouth, N.S., said Cristobal will likely continue moving northeast off Nova Scotia until late Tuesday night, when it's expected to shift to the southeast, dodging Newfoundland.

Baccaro Point in southwestern Nova Scotia received the most rain in the province, with 165 millimetres falling between Monday evening and Tuesday afternoon.

The monthly average for July is about 100 millimetres.

The downpours prompted the cancellation of boat tours departing from Halifax, forcing tourists to rework their vacation plans.
