Lady Loyalists improve to 3-0 in N.B. rugby

Fredericton Lady Loyalists improved to 3-0 in provincial women's rugby action with a 58-0 victory over Saint John Irish Saturday. Lady Loyalists led 15-0 at the half. Lindsay Brandon had three tries and four converts to lead the offensive charge with Amy Murphy adding a pair of tries. Single tries were by Emily Brown, Sarah Wilby, Sarah Braam and Leah Downton.

Pendrel places 2nd at national event

Catharine Pendrel, formerly of Harvey Station, finished just five seconds in back of winner Marie Helene Premont of Chateau-Richer, Que. at the national Tim Hortons mountain bike championships held at Mont Ste. Anne. Que. on the weekend. Premont's winning time was 1:42.12. Third was Wendy Simms of B.C. It was Premont's sixth career national title. Earning his fifth national elite men's title was Geoff Kabush of Victoria, B.C., finishing ahead of Derek Zandstra of Trenton, Ont. and Mathieu Toulouse of Montreal. Next event for Pendrel is the world cup stop at Mont St. Anne scheduled for this weekend. Pendrel has already qualified for Canada's Olympic team.

FDSA teams sweep U16 soccer matches

FDSA Clark Toyota Caps got goals from Kayla Painter and Olivia Babcock and shutout goaltending from Yashna Haiti to defeat Moncton First Touch 2-0 in provincial Aliant premiership U16 girls soccer action at Chapman Field Saturday. Meanwhile, the U16 Canadian Tire Caps defeated their counterparts from Moncton, 4-2, in provincial U16 boys action at Chapman Field. Brett Stillwell had two goals to pace the winners with singles to Diggy Paul and Mitch McCoy. Eric McGarry was the winning keeper. Eric Lebans and Guillermo Bergeron had the goals for First Touch.

U14 Caps, Chaleur play to soccer tie

It was the FDSA Canadian Tire Caps getting a goal from Noah Zilbert in a 1-1 tie against Chaleur in provincial Aliant premiership U14 boys soccer action in Bathurst Saturday. Remi Blois had the lone goal for Chaleur. Keeper for the Caps was Phillippe Long.

Orienteering deadlines set

Individuals looking to participate in the Sass Peepre junior orienteering camp in Saint John Aug. 17-20 are urged to have their registrations in before July 24. Final registration date for individuals looking to compete at the national championships Aug. 16-24 at Saint John's Rockwood Park is Aug. 2. Smith wins IWK 250 race in Antigonish

Former NASCAR driver Regan Smith of North Carolina won the IWK 250 event at part of the Maritime CARQUEST Pro stock tour Saturday night at Riverside Speedway near Antigonish, N.S.

The event featured the richest purse on the circuit valued at $103,000 with $10,000 going to the winner Smith. Shawn Turple of Enfield, N.S. finished second with Mike MacKenzie of Dartmouth finishing third. Former Frederictonian John Flemming of Halifax was 5th.
