Simple maintenance can reduce fuel consumption

With the environment on the minds of most motorists, it's becoming increasingly important for today's drivers to minimize their transportation-related impact on Mother Nature.

Car Care Canada says that there are presently some 18 million passenger vehicles using Canadian roads- a major source of pollution considering that many vehicles aren't maintained properly. It's important to make sure that regardless of age, your family vehicle gets proper maintenance and regular service to keep it running as cleanly and efficiently as possible.

An un-maintained engine can consume as much as 50 percent more fuel and emit 50 percent more emissions than one that's running properly. Something as simple as a clogged air filter or improperly inflated tires can throw your gas mileage right out the window as well. Follow your vehicle's recommended maintenance schedule for the sake of environmental responsibility, performance and resale value.

Remember, it's not just engine-related issues that can waste fuel and harm the environment. Check your vehicle's alignment by resting your hands gently on the steering wheel to see if it 'pulls' to either side over flat road. If your alignment is out, your tires will wear prematurely, and you'll experience diminished ride quality and poor fuel mileage.

Measure your vehicle's fuel efficiency after a fill-up to determine your average consumption in miles per gallon or litres per 100 kilometres. Keep track of this information. A sudden change in your vehicle's consumption could indicate a problem or driving habit that's costing you money. After filling up, make sure that the gas-cap is tightened well- as it could allow fuel vapors to escape if it's not.

Your air conditioning system is charged with chemicals that allow it to do its job, though they're nasty for the atmosphere if they manage to escape. A mechanic or your vehicle's dealership can give your air conditioning system a checkup to prevent such leaks and ensure its proper operation for every season. Though summer's over, air conditioning can be vital for window defrosting in colder months, too.

If you're a do-it-yourself type, make sure that any fluids you may drain from your car are disposed of accordingly. Many cities offer pickup of used batteries, tires, fluids and other nasty stuff right at your doorstep.

Remember, your favorite dealership or mechanic can give you more information and advice to help you keep your vehicle in proper running order. It's a win-win situation: you'll save fuel, have a longer lasting vehicle and wind up contributing less to global warming and pollution. Proper vehicle maintenance can prevent serious headaches down the line, too.
